Octopus! The Most Mysterious Creature in the Sea by Katherine Harmon Courage

Ranging from delicious meals, and contributing towards intriguing research, octopuses deserve more credit.  These creatures are yet to be fully understood, their characteristics can provide new technology for humans to utilise.  Journalist Katherine Harmon Courage has documented her journey of learning about octopuses in her book ‘Octopus! The Most Mysterious Creature in the Sea.’  This book offers insight into the fishing of octopuses, tasty recipes, typical behaviors in their habitat, and scientific research.

Courage travelled to many places including the Mediterranean and the Caribbean to explore prime fishing spots and octopus research labs.  Her journey has helped develop a deeper understanding and appreciation for the estimated 300 species of octopus.  With their differing features, I have learnt that each species has much to offer.

Octopus is eaten widely around the world, and prepared in a variety of ways.  But first they must be fished.  Fishermen have taken advantage of octopuses’ habits to develop efficient fishing techniques, and guarding their secret fishing spots.  Like many marine life, overfishing has led to a decline in the octopus population in places like Spain and Japan.   Balancing human demand and the octopus’s importance for the ecosystem, Courage describes the positive impact of population control measures enforced in many regions.

I have learnt that octopuses can contribute more than we think to science.  Their ability to change colour and transform their skin texture is still not completely understood by many scientists.   By unmasking this strength, it provides an impetus into developing alike technologies for humans.  Furthermore, Courage explores how octopus’s capabilities have already influenced science and robotics.

Along with learning about their impact within the world, Courage’s book has taught me the range of interesting features of the octopus.  From their intelligence, awareness, and memory, to reproduction and death, octopuses are impressive creatures.  I have developed an appreciation for these sea animals, and next time I am fortunate enough to see one, I will stop to admire it more closely.

This insight into octopuses is a testament to how science in nature can lead to the development of humankind.  Courage does a great job at sharing her research journey towards understanding the mysterious octopus.  By learning about octopuses’ role within the ecosystem, and their benefits for humans, we can positively impact their sustainability.  I would recommend Courage’s book about the octopus if you would like to learn more on everything they encompass.
